DIRECTV Stream - Choice Package

Choice is the first streaming plan with a bunch of sports programming -- it includes all you regional sports networks (RSNs) along with a bunch of specialty sports channels (MLB Network, NBA TV, SEC Network, etc). You'll pay a bit more for all that but for most sports fans, it's well worth it. Specifically, Choice includes 125 channels at a price of $84.99/mo. The current promotion discounts the price $10 for 24 months. Pretty solid bonus overall.

The Fine Print

Here at Provider Check, we're sticklers for reading the fine print. Not much good happens behind the guise of tiny font. Added fees, termination fees, etc. We scoured the terms of conditions of the Choice plan and here's what we found...

So, DIRECTV doesn't include the RSN fee with the main and larger-font prices you see on their site and in advertisements. There are mentions of it immediately below most instances of the price so, in our book, it's technically not a hidden fee. We'd still like to see more transparency but RSN fees vary quite a bit so it's somewhat understandable to spin that one off. Speaking of which, the actual RSN fee with DIRECTV can go all the way up to $25/mo but in the vast majority of cases it hovers around $13/mo.

Cost and feature breakdown: Entertainment Plan

Gemini Air device

If you decide to stream and order DIRECTV, you'll be presented with an option to add their mobile device, the Gemini Air. It's a dongle type device that instantly turns any TV to a smart TV. It's completely optional and lets you control all your programming via a familiar DIRECTV program guide. Cool features include MultiView (watch up to four games at once), slick voice remote, full "My Library" section, play/record with ease and much more. The Gemini goes $10/mo. per TV and there's no min or max number of 'em you can get. If you have multiple TVs, you can also just get one Gemini and use your own devices with the rest.

If you'd rather not pay an extra fee, you can opt out of the Gemini and stream via your own device (like a Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast, etc). DIRECTV streaming accounts without the Gemini are labeled as "BYOD" - bring your own device. Those with a Gemini are "Streaming App w/ Device". They qualify for slightly different deals and bonuses (you get more perks and value when you get the Gemini)...

Option A: Streaming App with Device

When you choose the Gemini, you get access to the full 2-year discount and suite of bonuses: ESPN Unlimited and Disney+/Hulu bundle. In lieu of the 5-day free trial (most providers don't offer a free trial when sending you a physical device), you'll get a 14-day refund window. If you change your mind, cancel and return the Gemini - DIRECTV will issue a full refund. Here's what your bill will look like with one Gemini device:

Option B: Streaming App - BYOD

Streaming with your own device saves your the Gemini leasing fee. You also get access to DIRECTV's 5-day free trial. It's completely unrestricted and you won't be billed until the 5 days are up. The downside is the monthly discounts are reduced from 24 months to three. The original and primary reason for the discount was to offset the price of the Gemini so DIRECTV somewhat understandably reduces the its duration when you use your own.

Finally, the Gemini device unlocks the Disney+/Hulu bundle offer so those two won't be included either. ESPN Unlimited is included. Here's a closer look:
